Garrucha is a picturesque seaport where many aquatic sports, in particular underwater fishing, can be practiced. The castle of Garrucha, of Jesús Nazareno or of San Ramón can be found on the same beach.
The origin of the current city dates back to the 16th century, founded by a group of fishermen, who protected themselves from possible pirate attacks by constructing a tower. Today this fishing port is the second most important in the province. Fishing provides its main source of income, because of the abundance of fish and other seafood in the area. They also construct both fishing and recreational boats.

Garrucha soon knew tourism. Already in the 18th century, landowners as well as mine owners were spending their summer holidays in the Malecón, a charming promenade. Coastal fishing, especially the harvesting of shrimp, is important and the catch of the day is sure to be found in nearby restaurants where patrons can relish its exquisite texture and taste. The ships leave at dawn and return mid-afternoon, which makes it possible to attend the fish auction that takes place in the port's fish market, one of the most interesting events that can be seen in fishing villages. In the street called Calvo Sotelo, near the town hall, one can find the church of San Joaquín and, in the outskirts of the city one can visit the castle of Jesús Nazareno. Throughout Malecón there are excellent restaurants and some picturesque fishermen's taverns.
